The annual Small Business Saturday is set to take Springfield by storm on Nov. 30, with sales and deals of all kinds hitting shelves across the Queen City.
From a downtown retail promotion to a market on historic Commercial Street, Small Business Saturday will cover nearly every zone in Springfield. There were nearly 1,500 retail merchants in Springfield in 2021, according to data from the Springfield Regional Economic Partnership.
Small Business Saturday was created 15 years ago by American Express to promote sales at local mom-and-pop retailers the day after Black Friday. The credit card company says the unofficial holiday generated $200 billion in sales.

The 7th in Walnut took an interesting approach to Small Business Saturday: it closed for the day. The downtown restaurant took to Facebook to write a poem about the woes of the holiday. The first verse says:
Oh, Small Business Saturday, what a mess,
The day after the Black Friday corporate festival.
“Support local stores!” the slogans proclaim,
But who is behind this? It’s Big Corp’s fault.
